Self promotion.
Today I started to work on my self promotional material, the physical work/pieces I would distribute to studios and other designers in order to gain work. The material will represent who I feel I am as a designer at this very moment as I feel I am always changing and evolving. I have been awaiting the moment where I have the chance and time to produce something representative of myself that when on visits to design studios to try and gain a placement, I can leave with them.
I would have liked to have done this sooner in the year, and I probably looking back could have done. However I have always convinced myself that if I have enough spare time to do so, I should be putting this energy into current design projects. This is something I have been trying to combat over the past year, learning when to say enough is enough.
First things first:
First of all to start the project, I sat and listed everything that I would want to send to a possible employer/ want them to see.
- A creative cv.
A creative cv will allow possible employers to learn not only my skills, what design I am interested in, and what I am strong at, but also help them to know my personality and other interests.
- A mini portfolio.
I want to include a mini portfolio of my favourite works that I have completed over the past two years, and also the strongest pieces of work I have done, as a visual indicator for the employer of what type of work I can produce and where my strong points lie.
- A business card.
A piece of information which a potential employee can look at for direct information on how to contact me, but is also a condensed representation of myself as a designer.
- Something extra.
I wanted to try and include something a little extra, such as a small piece of design that I could include in the pack which the receiver could interact with. Giving them a hands on piece of work, rather than just the images in my portfolio.
Inspiration:
Normally, for other projects, I do thorough research of the area/subject I am delving into, however for personal design, such as self promotion I like to work integrally, relying on the research I have conducted all year about my own process and work as inspiration, as well as my goals for future work. Much like the practice Architect Peter Zumthor follows in which he prefers to work without precedent, I find that this helps me embue a true representation of myself, rather than one blurred through looking at other designers self branding.
Peter Zumthor:
'In a question and answer section, Zumthor described himself as more of an isolated artist than an architect; someone who is not inspired by other architecture but instead tries to do everything without precedent. "I start from scratch, I guess I work more like an artist," he explained. "I'm not a typological architect, I'm more of an architect of place. I always start completely anew."

Mini portfolio:
I also listed the works which I think show off my skills the most/ are my best pieces of work so that potential recievers can have a visual reference of work that I am interested in/ strongest at completing.
Overall there are 6 projects I have which I have been happiest with completing at university. One from first year and 5 from my second year on the course.
These are:
