4. Have I reached mandatory requirements for each brief?
Is this evidenced and documented well on my blog?
Is it clear concise and in order?
Have I collected enough research?
3. How well is my work written?
Do I make points, with evidence and reasoning?
Do I use appropriate terminology?
1. Is context understandable?
- Levels of understanding.
- Makes points evidenced by reason and rationale?
-Is writing in a structure?
Focus on feedback.
In monday's PPP session we focused on what feedback we wanted, this followed by giving our peers feedback. We were asked to make a personal list on aspects of our work we would like feedback on.
If I am working efficiently.
If I am using my blog correctly.
If I am doing enough development.
Is what I am researching relevant/ of good quality.
The standard of my work.
In our blog groups we then combined our lists and stated what evidence we would need to collate and give of these in order to gain feedback. In addition to the list above, others in my group would also like to gain feedback on;
Talking and writing skills - analysed via context blogs and any oral presentations.
What they can do to develop ideas further - context blog.
The tutors initial thoughts of us up until now - progress crits and tutorial meetings.
Am I on track to pass? A success criteria.
We then made a list collectively as a class what we wanted feedback on and these were the outcomes:
1. Use of blog - content/organisation/quality of text and image
2. Assesment criteria - What is needed to pass?
3. Time and project management
4. Writing skills/ academic skills
5. Critical evaluation
6. Quality of work
7. Design descisions - producing/ presentation
8. Understanding design principles
9. Individual improvements (Am I getting better?)
10. Appropriateness of responses.
From this list we constructed 10 questions in a group that we would like answers to (feedback) from our other peers. We then individually had to pick 5 of these to post on our blog, that we would like a response to. my next post depicts my chosen 5.

OUGD403. Alphabet Soup typeface. Group crit - Friday 12th October.
4 days into the brief we had a group crit where we presented our ideas to 5 other students, and two of our course tutors. It was invaluable to get more of a one on one experience with tutors as well as gather other feedback from students who were of course completing the same brief. It was interesting to see how other students had started to process the brief, all beginning their own journey in response. After presenting my ideas and refining the crucial feedback I had been given, I three things I will take away or as an outcome the three things I will do are;
1. Focus on a solid idea!
I have experimented with a lot of ideas from the information my partner Amy had provided. Focusing on Siscott inspired illustration I had tried to create a different illustration for each letter to represent each of Amy's characteristics. However after going to the crit I was advised not to over complicate thins and stick to one idea, therefore one of Amy's characteristics. After most of the group favourited one particular letter form I had illustrated I decided to create a set of letters based upon this piece.
2. Always bring visuals to a crit!
Although I brought a few examples on concepts I had been working on, few people turned up to the crit with solely ideas in their head they had considered to pursue but no material to work with. Tutors and students can not give feedback without viewing any ideas on paper.
3. Experiment with fill and line.
As Amy had said her favourite colour was white I was afraid playing too much with fill may combat and override the information I had been given. However I plan to experiment more with line weight etc in order to work with not against the answers I received.

PPP- What is Graphic design? Part 2.
After collecting the five examples of my five chosen categories below, we were ask to pick one from each of the collections.
From these 5 we had to analyse what we thought were
1. The function - What is it trying to do?
2. Design Context - What is it? Who is its audience?
3. Tone of voice - Serious/ playful etc.
4. Message/ Idea/ Concept - What is it trying to communicate?
5. Intended scale - What scale should it be on?
Once we had written about our chosen 5 we had to consider if what we had collected could really be labelled as graphic design. Many found that they could depict a real function, or message, that they couldn't understand the tone of voice or who it's audience was. I learnt that, If the piece does not comply with any of the above and only scale, then it is in fact, not a piece of graphic design. If it can configure with elements such as function, message an design context, then this is the borderline for assessing work as a piece of graphic design.
As a group we then had to lay our remaining designs we had collected and find as many functions, design context, tones of voice, messages and scales from these as we could. from this we made 5 lists.
Function
1. Inform
2. Explain
3. Advertise
4. Instruct
5. Advise
6. Educate
7. Inspire
8. Promote
9. Persuade

11. Creating empathy
12. To shock or warn.
Context

10. catalogue/ brochure
11. cd/record cover
12. books
13. photography
Tone of Voice
1. Informative
2. Humorous
3. Serious
4. Playful
5. Empathizing
6. Satirical
7. Angry
8. Relaxed
9. Rude/ offensive
10. Polite
11. Formal/informal
12. Political
13. Instructional
Message
1. To help/ raise awareness- charities.
2. To get people to attend.
3. Promoting a brand, selling products.

OUGD402 STUDY TASK 2 - 'What is Graphic Design ?' - Part 1
For our next PPP session, we presented our 10 pieces of design that reflect our creative interests to our blog groups. As we went around one by one the rest of the group were to take notes, understanding why each piece of design had been chosen. From everyone in the classes list we summarized why particular designs had been chosen into 13 categories, which then led us to our next task.
'Using the online resources that you have been introduced to in the lecture studio workshop and with reference to the quotes used in the 'What is Graphic Design - Part 1' Presentation. Source, present and blog. examples of current design practice that reflect your creative interests. Choose 5 criteria from the list below that will guide your selection of work
- Creative use of Type
- Visual Quality
- Tone of Voice
- Attention to detail
- Simplicity of Design
- Meaning or Message
- Audience engagement / interaction
- Style or aesthetic quality
- Use of Media & Method of Production
- Relationship between Form & Format
- Interest in the content.
- Use / Choice of language
- Structure & Layout'The 5 I have chosen to continue researching are;
Creative use of type.
Simplicity of design.Use of media & method of production.Structure and layout.Attention to detail.CREATIVE USE OF TYPE.I have taken great inspiration currently from design that forces both text and image into a collaboration where they become one. It is engaging to see pieces in which both text and image are involved in a collusion and not separated by lines, or breaks and columns.Currently very interested in paper cutting, this piece struck my eye. It was interesting to see a paper constructed design that had taken on new forms. This typographic paper installation can be seen at the ' Concordia University Design Department End of Year exhibition, during the Montréal Design Portes Ouvertes 2010.' The sculpture is made up of hundreds of carefully cut pieces of paper accrued together to create a mirroring affect. The piece is cleverly portraying what the text reads.Already influenced by Darren Newman's typography, mainly his art noveau infused pieces, I have since found a couple of type designs that experiment interestingly with media, rather than style. Here he has taken one of his pieces 'Ever stopped to wonder what makes something beautiful' and printed it in glow in the dark ink. Even though he has produced a piece using the same slogan and ink in an art noveau font that he constructed, the use of line in this design that parallels the appearance of glow in the dark fibres seems a more creative and contextually linked example. This designed in particular I had found when researching into logos. What is eye catching about this piece in particular is its creative use of mirror imaging. The way in which when flipped both vertically and horizontally the design appears unchanged and in fact stays the same. The above images which incorporates typography is a unconventional piece of street art. I chose this particular piece of typography due to its in habitual choice of media. Instead of such traditional methods such as the use of pen or spray paint, this distinct group of designers (TheUpsideUp) have carefully placed a sequence of origami butterflies to shape the word 'Fly'.SIMPLICITY OF DESIGN.The simple designed of this business card is created through a collation of lack of colour, simple sans serif fonts and use of blind embossing. The use of only two back drop colours enhance the simplicity yet give the business card personality. The use of blind embossing creates an easy subtleness and an appreciation for both the logo, and the important information listed below. This is some branding created by New York based graphic design studio 'Tag collective' for photographer Finn O'hara. The use of colour breathes simplicity using a signature sequence of shades, white, black and orange combined with organic wood and card tones. Again the business card is of great simple design, trio coloured, black backdrop white and orange text with a simple yet striking orange edging. Here is a design for a magazine article I found that embraces the hypothesis that the thought process can be improved if we are able to speak more than one language. The design establishes the image of one brain, whilst the simple contrast in colour represents the two different languages. also Incorporated is two straight forward illustrations that replicate the idea of talking heads. The above Image depicts the cover of L.A magazine. I enjoy the simple method used in order to create a complex appearing design. 'The cover is a die cut L.A showing parts of an illustration by Brazilian artist Ana Anjos.'Quote and Image from;Above is an image of part of the identity constructed for German art gallery 'hypen'. Its use of statement monochrome colour sets it apart simply from its other competitors, Whilst its effortless signature font and use of line keeps it subdued without over powering its viewers.USE OF MEDIA AND METHOD OF PRODUCTION.This piece is very much involved in the process of letter press, which is currently one of my favourite medias when creating graphic design/ typography. Particularly blind letter press where no colour is involved.
Here is another example similar to the one above, only using embossing to detemine a pattern/ design in the backdrop as a pose to actual text. This is a new type of design that I haven't come across before, the designer, who is this project is creating business cards for himself has used a laser to cut into the surface of a section of 5mm acrylic. the engraving is on the underside to ensure a clean smooth finish to the business card. This is currently one of my favourite pieces of graphic design, using water colour the designer has created small areas of watercolour with sudden gradients and changes in colour, then drawing over the top they have created letterforms that echo natural forms and structures.(http://www.behance.net/gallery/Unbalanced-Type/2587955)
Here are another set of business cards I found that take on a whole different hand crafted design process. The design has been plotted out on small black business cards and then the designed threaded through in an array of different colours, therefor creating something much more personal that a mass printed identity.
STRUCTURE AND LAYOUT.This is an identity for a non profit organisation for kids. Inspired by the pair who wanted to start the organisation (Molly and Andrew) the graphic designer (RoandCo) decided to base the designs on Molly and Andrew themselves. The invites to the organisation of events are inspired by Molly and Andrew's wedding invitations. Aswell as many of the other products by their likes and personalities. This is a piece which has become one of my favourites, again sticks to monochrome colours, which are my favourite to work with at the moment. The use of illustrative topography also looks great in black white, as it rests subtly between the concise blocks of text.
One of the things I like most about this brochure is the use of black and white photos, not only that but the change in saturation when a range of photos are placed beside one another. Its heavily minimalist structure, presents its self in a way that is calming and easy to read, giving out a sense of serenity alike to the photos shown within.(http://www.behance.net/gallery/Craft-Victoria-Annual-Report/4117439)
A book of design that combines image and text playfully in inspiring collages. One of the most influential pieces I have found in my discovery, this piece is a 3d dimensional super interactive and innovative portfolio. The portfolio consists of a book of selected work, with well thought out layout, colour choice, size and tone aswell as a resume that illustratively and critically asses the skills of said designer as well as their education any language they speak and contact details. Both of these pieces have been designed to go in a box that have also been semantically linked through design in relation to choice of colour, shaoe and size.
(http://www.behance.net/gallery/Portfolio/4255523)ATTENTION TO DETAIL.Also one of my favourite medias, that I would love to improve and develop in is papercutting. Here is a wedding invitation, spanish inspired by the origin of the couple. Due to the high demand for hand made designs, I think paper cutting may be one of the next to surge due to the time and commitment It takes to cut something so detailed so perfectly. Here is a catalogue cover that has been drawn onto fabric and then carefully stitched to create perfect curved and patterns in hues of red pink and orange. This is a poster which I found to be one of my inspirations for the alphabet soup project (design 10 letters that express the word extract). The designer has created a design that consists of many layers of precise paper cutting in order to fabricate the fuller picture, weaving and intertwining them with each other.
This is an info graphic I found very much influential as I am trying to develop my illustrative skills to be more stylistically aware in relation to brief or client. The clean cut, use of geometric shapes and spatial awareness shows that the outcome of this piece is derived from a lot of time and creativity.(http://pinterest.com/pin/156429787026429469/)
This is an experimental typography book I found on the behance network. The detail comes from the time and effort in which the designer has taken something organic to create a form that is usually more structured and angular. Crafting plants carefully to create unfamiliar forms.
