OUGD402: Studio brief 2 - Its up to you part 2.

Having done a review of what I have learnt this year, I decided for the next bit of the process to look at information/ promotion packs already out there, designed by graphic designers.

Fun and Playful

This is a promotional pack by California based designer Keith Rodri, he has playfully created a character of a sea serpent, not normally seen in promotional packs and bound to stand out. The pack can be opened or left as a box to use as an ornament around the office in order to be memorable. The pack contains a number of products which cleverly follow the same 'sea' theme, and a business card holder which can also be placed on the employers desk. I thought I could consider something along the lines of this product as I am excited to try packaging design next year, and I have done a lot of illustration and character design this year. However I would need to find a way for the pack to include more information.

Well themed

I always love create a running theme within my work that audience can have fun with linking together, this way feeling a part of the design and getting a gratifying feeling from creating the links. This is a promotion pack designed by a Norway based designer focuses on the importance of consistency in a piece of design whilst being playful. the pack has a very fitting aesthetic of an identification folder.

Hand Made

Here are a set of business cards which the designer has hand made from scratch, The image on the front of the card is screen printed, the board in which it rests on is cut by hand and the yellow edges also penned by hand. The thing I love about this project is the undoubted appearance that these pieces have been produced by hand, but also the imperfections caused by these, thus projecting a real human sense. I have really enjoyed doing things by hand this year, I aim to screen print part of my project, and possibly bind by hand as I have enjoyed it so much this year.

Book Design

This is one of my favourite promotional packs I have found on my search, It is a simple book that communicates a simple message. I have really enjoyed making books this year, and so I feel making my pack as a book would be very much reflective of my design practice. The book ' The Chemistry of design: a love story' Tells the story of one designers relationship with graphic design. She has written the story herself, Story writing is what I also have enjoyed this year, and created a full set of illustrations to support this.

Typographic

Something that I've really learnt to love this year is typography, and in that sense creating my own typography. I found this self promo piece on Behance, and it demonstrates my love for type, illustration and alternate print processes. Here the piece has been foil blocked, not only does the detail of the design show the designer to be a hard worker, What is written in the text shows her personality and that she has a humorous and friendly side, the design in fact seems more humanised.

Ethical

Designer Sara Stansley came up with an ethical alternative to a great and playful concept. As I have had growing concerns over the year and a thirst to know more about how to be more ethical as a designer, this seemed like a fun way to incorporate you're beliefs as an ethical designer without producing a monologue about saving the world. The designer encourages the employer to plant seeds inside the pack, and watch them grow as she would as a designer, I love how she has also used the Herb names as play on words to describe the skills that she has.

Silk screen printed

This is another piece I have found on behance, however this one in particular combines my love for type, with a playful tone of voice and screen print which I have learnt to love the effect of.
